Headboard Heaven Happiness!

Standard

Hey Friends –

A little over a year ago, my daughter came to me with a picture of the room she had to have or her life would never be complete.

Ok – I was willing to try to make this work – but I had to do it on a budget.  She wanted all the orange to be green and the green to be orange.  I had a mission and I knew I could succeed with a little help from HomeGoods, fabric bought online and my staple gun!

The big statement in the room had to be the headboard.  I did a little research and decided this was definitely something I could tackle.  This is not as hard to make as you might think.  Here are the steps:

Things You’ll Need

  • 1/2-inch plywood cut to size
  • Spray adhesive
  • Upholstery foam or polyester batting, 8 inches wider and taller than the plywood
  • Fabric, 8 inches wider and taller than the plywood
  • Bed sheet, 8 inches wider and taller than the plywood
  • Staple gun

1.  Spread out old newspapers in a well-ventilated area and lay the plywood on top of them.

2.  Spray the plywood generously with spray adhesive.

3.  Carefully position the pre-cut upholstery foam or batting over the plywood. Spread it out so the edges evenly hang over the edges of the plywood. Make sure there are no air pockets, or places where the foam doesn’t adhere to the board.

4.  Spread out the fabric on a flat surface, right side down. If you want extra padding, use a bed comfortable. You’ll save even more money if you find a comforter you like at a clearance sale price.

5.  Spread out the sheet evenly over the fabric, making sure the edges of the sheet is even with the edges of the fabric. I use a sheet here so that if you ever want to change out the fabric – you don’t have to start over. Just remove fabric and put new fabric right over the sheet.

6.  Carefully center the plywood over the sheet/fabric with the upholstery foam facing down. You should now have everything layered, from bottom to top, in this order: fabric, sheet, upholstery foam, plywood.

7.  Begin at the top center and fold over the fabric, sheet and batting or foam, pull tight and staple it to the back of the plywood. Work your way to the ends of the top, alternating left and right to keep fabric from wrinkling.

8.  Pull tight on the bottom center section and staple it to the back of the plywood. Work your way to the bottom corners, alternating from left to right.  Check the front often to be sure the fabric is free of wrinkles.

9.  Repeat these steps for the two sides.

10.  Staple each layer one at a time – it makes it easier to take apart if you need to later.

Here is my finished headboard:

I have used this headboard again in another room with different colors.  I will show you in another post.

Do you have a bedroom that just doesn’t look complete?  Would you like to add some cheap and easy WOW to your guest room?  Has your teenager been wanting to change up their room for the 3rd time and you don’t want to put any more money into what might be temporary?  If you answered yes to any of these questions then this post is for you!  You won’t believe all the cool ways you can make a headboard!  Here is a sneak peek …

Seriously!  How awesome is this!  Got some old wood laying around and a can of spray paint?  That’s it for this rustic/industrial style headboard.  You could coordinate the color with your room and use any word that inspires you!  I think it would even look pretty cool with just initials!

Using metal or wooden letters and/or numbers in different sizes or fonts can really make an impact!  These letters are pretty easy to find on Etsy.com or Ebay.com.  The look can be contemporary, industrial or even a rustic cottage look.  I think this would look outstanding in a college dorm room, a first apartment or a teen’s room.

Your favorite piece of art used behind the bed gives you the chance to see it in a whole different light.  Whether it’s something you have painted, your child painted or something you bought – it can bring a great deal of meaning to a room by being so prominent.  This could work in any room – from a young childs to the master bedroom.  Use what you love – Art is subjective.

“Art and life are subjective. Not everybody’s gonna dig what I dig, but I reserve the right to dig it.”

Falling In Love Part II

Standard

I had my neighborhood book club last night.  Our book was Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand, the author who wrote SeaBiscuit.  It is the true story of Louie Zamparini, an Olympic runner and WWII POW.  If you want to read something that will stay with you for quite awhile, give this book a try.  The resilience of the human spirit in dire situations is truly unbelievable.  It left me wondering how I would react in a life or death situation.  I sure hope I don’t have to find out … I can get pretty miserable if the temperature is over 80 degrees and I haven’t had lunch.

Okay … on to what I know you have been waiting for … “The Craft Room Part II” !

Custom made island from Scott’s Antique Market with stools for visitor’s like me.  If you have never been to Scott’s you are missing out on one of the seven wonders of the world of shopping.  Scott’s is in Atlanta near the airport and takes place every 2nd weekend of the month.  It has everything from antiques, art, lamps and everything in between – including this amazing island.

This picture shows what a full life threemonkeez leads – tons of pictures of family and friends along with mementos.  This is what it’s all about!

Desktop with ribbon for wrapping the most beautiful gifts.  She believes that the wrapping should be as beautiful as the present and always includes your initial.  This is how I feel about her – her outside is as beautiful as her inside.  Check out my birthday gift below …

Notice the “M” in diamonds no less!

I will show you what was inside in another post … homemade and incredible!  Back to the Room …

Desk area … where the magic happens!

Just a normal little door that leads to storage – Ha!  How cool is that?

Lucy, you got some ‘splainin’ to do!

Fred Mertz: She said my mother looks like a weasel.
Lucy Ricardo: Ethel, apologize.
Ethel Mertz: I’m sorry your mother looks like a weasel.

Can you say super organized and a little nuts?  A little nuts is good because being crazy is the new sane!

Being crazy is awesome. See this quote:

History shows that the people who end up changing the world – the great political, social, scientific, technological, artistic, even sports revolutionaries – are always nuts… until they’re right… and then they’re geniuses.”

John Eliot, PH.D.
Author of Overachievement

Don’t you just love dried hydrangeas on a cool pot rack in a craft room?  So elegant and feminine!

Here is the first good look at the ceiling.  The pictures don’t even really do it justice … it is sensational!!  Her husband put this together for her – it almost looks like old gates.

Notice the unfinished part of the ceiling – painted black – looks industrial but perfect with the rustic look of the gates!  I saw the following pictures of this villa in Italy … what does the ceiling remind you of?

Magnificent!  Just like this Craft Room.  Thank you threemonkeez.com for opening your home and sharing it with me and my readers!

Hope your life brings you more heaven than havoc!

Get Ready to Fall in Love!

Standard

I will be including this post in the Weekend Bloggy at Serenity Now!  Come check it out!

Hey All!

Hope everyone is having a wonderful week!  I had a great birthday … thanks again for all the wishes!  Speaking of wishes …my family took me to Hibachi for dinner (my favorite).  After dinner the wait staff sang Happy Birthday to me in Japanese, along with clapping, yelling out “hey! hey!” and an ice cream sundae.  My kids were just thrilled with all the attention drawn to our table and me being the only one in the group yelling “hey! hey!” with my fists pumping in the air.  Anyway … the sundae had a candle for a wish.  My one wish for the year.  As I am contemplating the wish of all wishes … my “hilarious” kids blow out my candle (you know who you are).  Looks like my chance of winning the lottery and losing 20 pounds are out for this year.

As promised … get ready to fall in love with the craft room of all craft rooms!  This is my friend from threemonkeez.com.  She is truly one of the most creative women I have ever known – as well as the kindest and most generous.  With a little hair-pulling, I talked her into taking some pictures for me of this amazing room.  Besides this room being absolutely beautiful – everything in it has a meaning just to her.  It is truly her room.  So here we go …

She wanted this room to look like an old back porch.  So her husband built her the ultimate “back porch” in her basement.  Notice the siding on the walls so the room looks like it is outside. He even included one wall in old brick.  The floor is raised  so you step up into the room and walk onto wide plank wood floors.  It is like coming into craft room heaven.

The words on the wall read “Everyday holds a possibility of a Miracle”.  If you saw the projects that come out of this room, you believe this saying!

This is her grandmother’s old sewing machine.  The legs were damaged in a move so she kept the cabinet and can now see it everyday while dreaming up new ideas.  I love things that have deep meaning.  Check out the ceiling.  More to come on this.

This is the brick wall.  How lucky to have a husband that can recognize your vision and be able to bring it to fruition!  The brick wall adds so much character to this room and really does make you feel like you are outside.

An old distressed hutch serves as storage for baskets of all kinds of art supplies.  Look at that incredible brick wall and beautiful wood floors.  There are pictures of family and friends all over the room – a reminder of what’s really important.

Love the birdhouses!

Wow!  I love this old Hoosier Cabinet!  If you open up the single cabinet next to the open shelf, there is an old coffee grinder inside.  So unique and cool!  Using furniture for different things than what was intended is a great way to give your room character.  Bookshelves are fine … but an antique Hoosier … come on – awesome!  The three baskets next to the cabinet is filled with flowers and paint brushes.  Easy access and instant inspiration!

Painting an old window makes such a statement.  Looks great inside or outside.  You can find old windows at flea markets fairly easily.  They are usually cheap – but be careful – the really old ones are painted with lead paint.  Be sure to wear a mask if you decide to strip and repaint the frame.

The other side of the Hoosier.  Check out the siding on the walls.  How cool is that?  Remember this room is inside in a basement.

Okay … I can’t give it all away today.  You will have to check back to see the rest of this astounding room!  More pictures tomorrow – including the incredible ceiling!

Have a blissful Tuesday!

Hope life is more heaven than havoc!

Happy Birthday to Me!

Standard

Thanks so much to you all for being my first official Followers!

45!  I can’t believe I am 45! Well, the good news is that I am out of bed and not in the fetal position crying hysterically like my 40th (and I’m guessing my 50th) …  The bad news is that I am out of bed.  I wish that your birthday was a day for napping, magazines and Ben & Jerry’s Phish Food!  Oh well … a girl can dream.

Today’s post is an introduction to Havoc to Heaven.  I have had a lot of friends ask me:

  • Where did you get that?
  • How did you make that?
  • Can you find me ____ on the internet?
  • How did you think of that?

I hope that this blog will answer some of these questions and lead to many more ideas, questions and adventures!  Please let me know if there is something you would like to see.

I have always dreamed of having my own “Craft Room”.  This is what I have right now –

Havoc right?

Even if you don’t “craft” – wouldn’t it be great to have a space all to yourself?  It could be filled with all your favorite things that mean something just to you.  Talk about happiness!

Here are some ideas of Craft Room Heaven

Looks a lot like my craft closet doesn’t it?  Hmmm…

Oh man – how cool is this little area?  I love the crib mattress spring above the desk and the old cheese graters holding pencils and pens. What unique ideas.  I love people who use things in a different way and it is so green!   Reuse – Recycle – Renew!

PANTONE® 17-1463

I am loving orange this year.  Tangerine Tango by Pantone has been named the color of the year.  Orange is so happy.  I can see myself in that window seat with the newest home decor magazine.  And look at that ceiling!

Lots of fun colors!

I can’t imagine having this much space or being this organized.  Wow!

Look at all the light coming through the window!  The color is so peaceful – a great green/gray neutral that looks great with the white trim.

theprojectgirl.com

The word in the window says it all – “Simple”.  A big table and lots of storage.  You could do this room for pretty cheap.  Using stock cabinets from the big box home stores always work well … you can even find them in the “scratch and dent” for really cheap.  The table is just a big conference table.  These are on craigslist all the time or you can find them at the office furniture discount warehouses.  I would like to see a darker, brighter color on the walls.  With so much light coming in, I think a darker color would cozy up the room.

I like that you can see everything you have on the open shelves.  You could sit in the big comfy chair, look around and become inspired!

I love Apple Green walls!  Reminds me of the color Tupelo Tree by Sherwin Williams – SW6417.  It’s an amazing green that looks great with chocolate brown, black or white.

These are just a few of the wonderful craft rooms I have found.   But, none of them can hold a candle to my friend from threemonkeez.com.  Her room is the “mack daddy” of all craft rooms!  I can’t wait to show it to you … check back with me on my next post for some great pics and amazing ideas!  I promise you will not want to miss it!

On another note … Congratulations to my brother and my sister for their win last night.  They tied with 14 categories picked correctly on last night’s Oscar’s.  They will each get the Oscar for 6 month’s.  I was off my game last night with only 8 picks – but my niece really blew it.  This was the first year the kids were included and she got 2!  We teased her all night.

Thanks for all the birthday wishes I received already this morning.  I have the most amazing family and friends.  I feel so blessed.

See you soon!  Hope life is more Heaven than Havoc!

Counting Down the Days …

Standard

The day is drawing near … my first real post is set to publish on Monday, February 27th (my 45th birthday)!  I thought this might be a good day to start so my blogging anniversary is memorable.  This is also the day after the Oscar’s – one of the best night’s of the year!  My family is really into the Oscar’s.  We all fill out our picks and I keep the master sheet and score.  Whoever wins the most categories gets the Oscar (we actually have a fake/real Oscar) for the year.  Huge Honor!!  It has been fun to see the next generation begin to get involved.  My teenage girls and I are already planning our evening of red carpet – great food – long speeches …. tons of fun!

See you here on Monday!  I am preparing a post that’s “heaven”!
